How to use rattan in your home

Rattan Trend2

It might just be the ‘it’ material of the season but it’s certainly not a new kid on the block.

Using rattan, wicker and cane was a popular trend back in the boho-loving 70s. But like all things 70s retro, it’s making a comeback and we couldn’t be more excited.

This tactile material made of fast-growing woven grasses is the perfect foil to your spring and summer decorating style – warm and casual and effortlessly natural. The good news is that not only is it a sustainable material, there are also so many different ways to dip your toe into this trend. You’ll find it pairs perfectly with a multitude of styles, from rustic and traditional to industrial, Scandinavian, bohemian and more.

Here are our top tips on embracing texture this season by incorporating the popular rattan trend into your home.

Add Some Storage

One of the simplest ways to pull in the rattan trend is to incorporate some much-needed storage into your home. Baskets can be used nearly anywhere in the home, from storing a throw next to the sofa to a place for shoes to be tossed without cluttering up your hallway.

Consider a few baskets in bookshelves to stash away the children’s toys or hide away remote controls or choose a few to fill in the wasted space above kitchen cupboards for rarely-used linens or a rattan tray in your entrance hallway to collect and contain post, keys and sunglasses.

Take a Seat

If you’d like to add some textural style to your living room, dining room or bedroom, you’ll have plenty of choice from lots of different retailers this year. From simple woven designs to more intricate retro creations, rattan seating will add natural organic texture to your home.

Consider rattan seating for your dining room table to bring in a more casual vibe or place a single rattan chair in a sunny bedroom window for relaxation. Hanging chairs are also a great way to create the wow-factor in a room – just add a few woven global-inspired cushions to bring in that boho feel.

Bring the Outdoors In

With the houseplant trend only gaining more momentum, our love for greenery in our home only grows stronger (pun intended!). Look out for woven planters that will add an extra dimension and interest to your urban jungle or fill a sunny windowsill with a variety of sizes to maximise that outdoor-in look.

Make a Statement

Our bedrooms are another great place to embrace the rattan trend with rattan woven headboards making waves this year. For those that love a more traditional look, consider a French style which incorporates rattan alongside intricately carved wood. Add some luxuriously-soft Belgian linen bedding and a simple summer-weight throw to complete this airy and elegant style.

Embracing your inner bohemian? Check out the myriad of designs from simple open weaves to more intricate peacock styles and pair with Moroccan style cushions and deep piled rugs to welcome bohemian comfort.

Light It Up

And finally, consider woven pendant lighting to add a touch of texture to nearly any room in your home.  With gaps between the weaves, plenty of light will escape, creating an airy and open look. Over a dining room table, size up to create a statement or add a trio of simple rattan pendants above a breakfast bar.
