There’s something special about gathering your favourite people, firing up the grill, and enjoying good food under the open sky. One of the best parts of owning a new build home is having a fresh, thoughtfully designed outdoor space that’s ready to host it all – from casual barbecues to epic summer celebrations.

Planning your first, or next, BBQ? Here’s some tips on how to make it unforgettable:

Start with a seamless space

Start by making the most of the layout of your home. Many new builds feature open-plan kitchen-dining areas with French doors that open directly onto the garden. This creates a natural flow between indoors and out, making it easy to move between cooking, chatting, and relaxing.

Style your garden for socialising

New build gardens often come turfed, fenced, and ready for you to add your own style. A few thoughtful upgrades can make a big impact. Adding decking or paving provides a stable area for furniture and a BBQ station, while planters, pots, or raised beds add greenery and charm. Festoon lights or solar lanterns create a cosy atmosphere as the sun goes down, and adding a fire pit or chiminea will help you and your guests stay warm, keeping the gathering going into the evening.

Serve a crowd-pleasing menu

When it comes to food, the key is to keep it simple, fresh, and full of flavour. A menu of grilled classics like burgers, skewers, sausages or plant-based alternatives can cater to a wide range of tastes. Pair these with a few easy-prep sides, such as potato salad, grilled corn, or coleslaw, and you’ve got a winning combination.

Set the scene with simple touches

It’s the small details that turn a BBQ into an event. Curate the atmosphere with ambient lighting, music, and a laid-back setup that invites guests to linger. Play your favourite summer playlist through a portable speaker, lay out a few outdoor cushions and throws, and consider using citronella candles to keep any bugs at bay. These small touches make your space feel considered and relaxed, without the need for fuss.

Make it family-friendly

If you’re expecting children at your BBQ, a few extras can make all the difference. Garden games like ring toss, giant Jenga or frisbee can keep them entertained. Offering mini versions of BBQ food, or even setting up a small DIY treat station, will also help make your younger guests feel included.

Whether you’ve just moved in or have been settled for a while, there’s nothing better than enjoying your home with the people you love. A BBQ is the perfect way to make the most of your space, soak up the sunshine, and create lasting memories.
