If you’re spending Christmas in your new home this year, you’ll be wanting to decorate for the occasion and get into spirit.

From traditional reds and greens to contemporary themes, there are many different festive styles out there for you to choose from. Here are some decorating tips for your home.

1. Choose your tree

One of the first steps of decorating your home for Christmas is choosing the right tree.

With artificial trees coming in a variety of sizes, shapes, and styles it can be hard to know which one to go for. If you’re looking for a real tree, head to your local garden centre or tree farm and browse the varieties available. The size of your tree will come down to where it’ll be placed in the home. The most common places tend to be in the corner of living rooms, in hallways or other large, central spaces in the home. Choose a tree that will compliment your room and will stand out.

2. Add your decorations

When it comes to deciding what decorations to put on your tree, start off by choosing a colour scheme which ties in with your room. Complimenting existing colours and furniture, creating a seamless and sleek look.

Try and stick to two colours for your decorations, so it doesn’t look cluttered and try to experiment with different textures. Always remember less is more and remember to start with your lights first. Our advice is to use 100 lights for every foot of tree, to make sure they are distributed equally, and every part of your tree is lit. And don’t forget the topper! Opt for a traditional angel or beautiful star.

3. Beyond the tree

Decorations don’t have to stop at the tree, think about how you can incorporate festive accessories around the rest of your home. Add festive décor to mantelpieces, windowsills, or side tables. Using draped foliage garlands entwined with warm lights, various ornaments, stockings and Christmas cushions. Try to decorate bare surfaces like coffee tables and shelves with these accessories and add festive figurines to give your home extra personality.

4. Create a dining centrepiece

The dining table is where you, your family and friends will gather for the most important meal of the year. Trade your everyday tableware for themed replacements, to bring festive cheer to the table. Adding a centrepiece to your table is great way to begin your Christmas table dressing. Why not create one yourself from leftover decorations and foliage. Include pinecones, holly, and candles to set a cosy atmosphere. To complete, add wrapped napkins, personalised place cards and crackers for some family fun.

5. Take the decorations outside

Don’t be afraid to take your Christmas spirit outside. Lights are one of the most popular exterior decorations, from icicle to pathway lights. If you have trees to the front of your home, why not wrap them in string lights or surround with illuminated reindeers to bring some festive cheer to your street. And no front door is complete without a wreath. Go for a simple wreath with classic foliage and red berries or go fancy with a pre-lit sparkly star wreath. If you want to go all out, transform your homes entrance with a festive archway.
