Staying motivated during the winter is a real test of character. No one wants to get up early to go for a run before work and all we want to do when we get home is snuggle up on the sofa and eat junk food.

Breaking this cycle and getting motivated will be the difference between piling on the pounds over winter and regretting it come spring, and emerging from the winter looking and feeling amazing. Here are our top tips to stay motivated along with some workout ideas to get you started.

Consistency is key

This is perhaps an overused motto, but it really works. If your goal is to get up each morning and go for a run before work, you have to stick at it. The first few times won’t be so bad, but soon you’ll want to stop doing it and just stay in bed instead.

It’s these times that are the most crucial. If you can push through, ignore the voice in your head making excuses, and get up anyway, it’ll soon become easy. It’s about keeping going when you don’t want to and making something a daily habit.

If you keep allowing yourself to stop and revert to your old ways, you’ll never know what would’ve happened if you’d stayed dedicated.

Keep it fun

There’s nothing worse than having a long, tiring day at work, and coming home knowing you’ve got a boring workout to do. Make sure you keep your training fun, and the minute you stop enjoying it, switch it up.

There are so many ways to train, you just need to find what works for you. Always remember your goals, and why you are exercising. Is it to train for your first marathon? Is it to lose weight? Or is it to become strong and fit enough to keep up with your kids? No matter what your reasoning, you’ll never stay committed if you’re hating the process. Don’t go it alone

Trying to stay motivated when you’re alone can not only end in failure, but it can affect you mentally too. Tell people about your goals and talk about your workout plans so that you are reminded why you’re doing it and so people can give you a boost when it’s needed.

Hiring a personal trainer or coach is also a great way to stay motivated as it’ll mean you’ll have more than just yourself to let down if you miss a workout. Your PT or coach will help you to stay motivated and can pick you up when you’re feeling extra low.
