2019 interior design trends to watch

2019 interior design trends

With each new year, a new crop of interior design styles come in to refresh our interior spaces.

Whether you decide to fully embrace a brand-new look or simply dip your toe into the waters with a few choice accessories, you’re sure to fall in love with at least a few.

Here are some of the latest interior design trends that you’ll be seeing everywhere in 2019:

70s retro

Whether it’s the glitz of a disco ball or the soft textures of bohemian comfort, the 70s are back and ready to boogie. Look out for fringing on everything, from lamps to cushions, as well as an abundance of plants and sculptural shapes in furniture. Orange, mustard and olive green also feature heavily, but don’t worry, the avocado bathroom suite is still safely in the past.

Art Deco glam

If you love your interiors with a bit of sparkle, then the return of the Art Deco look will have you clinking your champagne coupe in delight. Gold and brass have been a big trend for a few years now and they’ll still be going strong, so combine these with jewel-toned velvets and scalloped furniture for an update on a classic. The must-have pieces of furniture for this look? A luxe velvet sofa and a well-stocked drinks trolley, of course.

Desert shades

While cool greys have dominated interiors for nearly a decade, warm shades are making a comeback with barely-there nudes, oatmeal and beiges being the latest neutrals to make their mark. If that’s not enough colour for you, then consider bringing in other desert favourites – from warm ochres to rust, peach, terracotta and salmon shades to create a warm and welcoming vibe in your home.

Curves ahead

From scalloped headboards to curved sofas, there’s been a rebellion against all the straight, hard lines we’ve been seeing whilst Mid-Century Modern has dominated as a trend. Fish-scale tiles are big news in bathroom and kitchen design and circular shapes are showing up everywhere from our tables to our tubs.

Space age

Inspiration is everywhere and looking up is the new looking back. Create a heavenly interior with star shapes and constellations as well as zodiac and astrology symbols. Look out for pieces with an iridescent quality or reach for the stars with a galactic-inspired wall mural.

Sustainable materials

With a view to the future, eco-friendly materials have been on the forefront of design, and 2019 will be the year where we’ll see even larger global brands taking up the challenge to create more sustainable products. From bamboo to cork to recycled plastics, wood and steel being used more often, this trend will hopefully mean our planet will be just a bit better off next year.
