Things to do

You’ll never be short of things to do in Newcastle, with its many museums, art galleries, theatres, and entertainment venues as well as its rich history and energetic nightlife.

For those in search of culture, Newcastle is home to museums with exhibitions on the history of Newcastle itself and interactive activities as well as its art galleries housing both contemporary art works and world-renowned pieces.

The North East is steeped in heritage and historical landmarks with Newcastle Castle and The Angel of the North on your doorstep to see.

The night owls among you will want to experience the infamous night on the ‘toon and beyond. With the North East's array of pubs, bars, and nightclubs, you’ll have no trouble dancing the night away.

Sunderland Museum Library and Winter Garden is in the heart of the city and is the place to go to take a deep dive into all things Sunderland and learn about its rich history and heritage. Meanwhile, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, inside the World-famous National Glass Centre, showcases contemporary art installations and works from artists across Europe.

No visit to Durham would be complete without a walk around the world-famous Durham Cathedral, which together with the Castle forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Durham City. Likewise, Metrocentre sits in Gateshead, just over the river and offers more high street favourites.

The Bridges indoor shopping centre has been at the centre of Sunderland for many years. Boasting over 90 high street stores, plenty of parking and excellent public transport links, shopping doesn’t get better than this. The Bridges’ central location means there is plenty of opportunities take a break and grab bite to eat or a coffee at any of the city’s great restaurants and cafes.

There are plenty of high-end designer stores for those wanting to treat themselves or a loved one and supporting small businesses won’t be hard with Durham’s selection of independent retailers and vintage shops.

Transport

There are many ways to get to and from the North East and indeed get around the cities too. Newcastle Central Station offers links to other major cities like London, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Leeds.

Sunderland Central Station offers services to London via York and the major stations at Newcastle and Durham are close by too.

The Metro is an affordable and easy way to get around Newcastle and has been voted one of the most efficient modes of transport in the UK. The city also offers an easy-to-use bus service, where you’ll be able to take in the sights as you travel.

Travelling by car is no problem as the North East is surrounded by major A roads taking you north and west and the A1 taking you south. For those wanting to go a bit further afield, Newcastle International Airport is less than half an hour away by car.

Food

Foodies will feel right at home in the North East with its many restaurants, cafes and street food pop-ups. The city boasts craft ale breweries, artisan bakeries, top-rated chefs, and diverse flavours from around the world.

Splash out and celebrate with a meal at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants or share a pint with your pie and mash at the North East’s best pubs.
