Living in Lanarkshire

All of this, right on your doorstep

Things to do

Calderglen Country Park makes for a fabulous day out with the family. With a Children's Zoo, Nature Trails, Toddlers' Play Area, Café, Adventure Play Area, and an 18-hole golf course, there's no risk of boredom.

The Glen extends over three miles and has many attractive waterfalls and important geological features. The Northern section of the park is also noted as a Geological Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The Museum of Scottish Industrial Life can be found on the site of the nineteenth-century Summerlee Ironworks. It was formerly one of Scotland's most important ironworks and the remains of its blast furnaces and other structures can be seen from the view pod and parapet at the north-east side of the main exhibition hall.

The museum site covers 22 acres and has many attractions for all the family, including Scotland's only operational heritage tramway and recreated mine, with guided tours, miners' cottages, all-ages playpark, and lots more.

Glasgow is home to many iconic buildings, some housing the city's museums and art galleries, where you will find everything from pre-history to Picasso. The historic City Chambers are a sight to see as is the stunning Glasgow Cathedral, which is next to one of the most significant cemeteries in Europe, The Necropolis.

Shopping

Glasgow is the perfect place to be if you need some retail therapy, home to shops to suit all needs and budgets. From high street favourites to high-quality vintage, small independent stores to designer fashion – you'll find everything you need in Glasgow.

Most of the city's shops can be found on Glasgow's Style Mile in the city centre, where all stores are close together meaning you can browse at your leisure. This is the home to shopping centres and premier department stores including St. Enoch Centre, Ingram Street, Buchanan Galleries, Buchanan Quarter, House of Fraser, Princes Square and much more.

Transport

With the M74, M77 and M8 through to Lanarkshire and other major A roads in the region, commuting or travelling by car is straightforward.

Glasgow Airport is close by, for those in search of sunnier climates or wanting to travel further afield.

Food

Lanarkshire and more specifically, Glasgow's food and drink scene is diverse and vibrant, with cuisine to whet all appetites.

Eating and drinking well is firmly embedded in Glasgow's culture: whether a light lunch after a morning at a museum, a slice of cake and a coffee after an afternoon of shopping, dinner in one of the city's buzzing neighbourhoods, or drinks before a gig, you’ll never run out of places to curb your hunger.
