Living in Leicester

All of this, right on your doorstep

Leicester has an amazing range of attractions for all the family to enjoy.

Expect an experience that is truly out of this world at the National Space Centre. With six galleries to explore, full of satellites, meteorites and rockets, and spacesuits adorning the Welcome Hall (including the Sokol Suit worn by our very own Tim Peake and others worn by Hollywood actors and even Buzz Aldrin), you can stand in awe of what science can achieve as you learn about what lies beyond our skies.

Not just famous for Richard III, Leicester also gave us another famous Richard, Richard Attenborough, his start at the Little Theatre and was where both Adrian Mole and his creator were born. Enjoy some theatre at the beautiful Curve Theatre or laugh the day away at the annual Leicester Comedy Festival.

Leicester Cathedral is a peaceful and tranquil place to wander around as you take in the majesty of the architecture and soak in the history built into its walls.

Shopping

Whether you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind addition to your wardrobe, a beautiful and unique gift, or some stylish homewares, after a leisurely stroll down the Lanes in Leicester, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. Discover the vast stretch of independent shops, cafés and florists.

If you prefer your wares more mainstream, Highcross Leicester is the shopping mall for you. Here you’ll find all your high street favourites including River Island, H&M, Primark, Boots and Jack & Jones. When it’s time for a refuel, choose from one of many restaurants and cafés or catch a film at the Showcase Cinema de Lux.

For the very best of local produce, head to Leicester market, offering fresh meat, vegetables, bread, and pastries.

Transport

Whether you’re commuting or visiting friends and family elsewhere in the UK and beyond, Leicester is not short of transport options. With the M1 and M69 motorways nearby, Leicester is perfectly set up for travelling by car with ease.

Leicester train station offers direct links to London, Leeds and Nottingham, where you can access other major cities in the UK.

For those wanting to travel further afield, East Midlands airport is less than an hour away by car.

Food

Leicester offers an exciting range of food and drink options to suit every taste and budget, from cosy coffee shops and award-winning, modern British restaurants to quirky independent bars, classic local pubs and vibrant nightclubs.

The city was formerly known as the Curry Capital of the UK and lovers of a good ruby will be spoilt for choice here with a vast range of restaurants serving up delicious Indian cuisine. Fans of a cheeseboard will also be delighted here; Red Leicester was first produced in Leicester in the 17th century, its rich orange colour indicating the quality of the cheese. If red cheese isn’t your thing, fear not… Stilton is also made in the region, as is another picnic hamper essential, the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie.
