Living in York

All of this, right on your doorstep

Things to do

With the glorious Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, and the Wolds right on its doorstep and its convenient location halfway between London and Edinburgh, York is one of the most unique cities in England. In York, you can expect to find thirty museums waiting to be explored, the best racecourse in the country to spend the day betting at, and an important and historic cultural scene.

Travel back through time and discover the city's rich history at York Castle Museum. The interactive and immersive exhibitions hold thousands of historic artifacts that bring the past to life and are a great way to spend a day out for all the family.

From L.S. Lowry and Turner to Hockney, the York Museum is a place to surround yourself with some of the best art in the world. The gallery has three exhibition spaces on the ground floor, displaying the best of national and international exhibitions, and four on the first floor, including two galleries which are home to the Centre of Ceramic Art, which showcases our internationally significant collection of British Studio Ceramics. Behind the gallery, walk down into the Artists Garden and the Edible Wood before exploring the rest of the beautiful York Museum Gardens.

Shopping

Shopping in York is an experience not to be missed, with its winding cobbled streets selling a variety of items to suit all budgets. You'll find independent boutiques and highly regarded vintage stores, as well as plenty of high street favourites. If you’re feeling festive, pop in and visit Käthe Wohlfahrt on Stonegate, and immerse yourself in a fantastic Christmas world.

Winner of the most picturesque street in Britain, the Shambles is an ideal place to go back in time for some olde world retail therapy. It was originally home to butcher shops, with its unique overhanging first floors keeping the meat out of the sun, but now this York landmark is bustling with everything from art and books to fashion and sweet treats. It’s also worth a visit for fans of Harry Potter, as the street is known for being the inspiration for Diagon Alley and has three shops for all your broom and potion needs.

Transport

With many major A roads leading to the ring road surrounding the city and motorways linking you to the north and south of the country, commuting and travelling by car is straightforward.

York train station offers links to other major cities in the UK including London, Leeds, and Manchester as well as trains to Scotland.

Leeds-Bradford airport is less than an hour away by car, for those in search of sunnier climes and wanting to travel further afield.

Food

York is the ultimate destination for foodies and those looking for dining experiences, with a vast variety of dishes to suit every taste and budget.

Go big and treat yourself to some fine dining, discover small, local independent restaurants or savour the street food at the Shambles Market Food Court. You can shop for treats, learn some new cooking skills with classes and chef demonstrations, or take part in one of the most unique pub crawls, the Ale Trail, taking you to some of York's best pubs.

Whether your day in York is all about the food or you're seeing all the marvels and sights the city has to offer, one thing is for sure - you won’t leave hungry!
