New homes in
Sheffield

Welcome to Sheffield – a city recognized as the greenest city in Europe with more trees per person than any other city in Europe (4.5 million trees) and a third of the city lying within the serene Peak District National Park.

The largest settlement in South Yorkshire and the third most populous district in the UK (as of 2019) and a member of the Core Cities Group, Sheffield has long been considered the backbone of the UK, being responsible for much of the steel production during significant periods of the nation’s history, most notably during World War II.

More than just a farming and manufacturing city, Sheffield also has a thriving folk music and poetry scene with the city being responsible for some of the biggest acts that have come out of the UK in the last 50 years including Joe Cocker, Def Leppard, The Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, and The Long Blondes amongst others.

A city of history-makers, Sheffield is home to the world’s oldest football club (Sheffield FC), the world’s oldest football ground (Sandygate), and the UK’s first-ever professional Ice Hockey team (Sheffield Steelers).

Things to do

In a city as large and dynamic as Sheffield, it is difficult to run out of things to do.

With 6 cinema complexes (including a throwback drive-in cinema at the Don Valley Bowl) and the largest theatre complex outside of London, with 3 notable theatres (the Lyceum, Crucible, and Studio theatres), there’s no lack of entertainment.

If you prefer to be in on the action yourself, Sheffield also plays host to several notable festivals including the Grin Up North Sheffield Comedy Festival and the Sensoria Music and Film Festival, both taking place in October.

If you are a budding musician, you can also join one of Sheffield’s many orchestras and choirs. Choose from the Sheffield Symphony Orchestra, the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sheffield Chamber Orchestra, the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra, or one of the city’s two community choirs: the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus community choir or the Chorus UK community choir. Alternatively, you could join the Sheffield Carols, a community music group that go around the local pubs spreading joy at Christmas with their recitals of beloved Christmas carols.

The city is also home to 13 different Morris Dancing teams!

For art enthusiasts, get inspired by visiting Graves Art Gallery, Millenium Galleries, or Weston Park Museum.

Want to learn more about the history of this great city? Why not visit Kelham Island Museum which showcases Sheffield’s manufacturing past, displaying the mesmerizing relics of a bygone era.

Shopping

As one of the UK’s major cities, Sheffield’s retail sector is expectedly extensive. Most of the stores in the city are concentrated in the following areas: The Moor precinct, Fairgate, Orchard Square, and the Devonshire Quarter.

In the city centre, you can find department store juggernauts such as Marks & Spencer and Atkinsons amongst others - though perhaps the ultimate shopping destination in Sheffield is Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

Currently the 12th largest shopping centre in the UK (as of April 2022), Meadowhall Shopping Centre is home to 270 shops, 37 restaurants and a cinema. It is also well connected to the rest of the city by rail, Supertram and bus, making it one of the most visited spots in Sheffield.

Moving away from the high-end retail outlets, Sheffield is also home to Sheffield Moor Market, a place many locals visit for their fresh produce needs. Selling organic and local produce, Sheffield Moor Market houses 196 stalls and has a truly international feel: offering a diverse array of cuisines from around the world.

Transport

Sheffield is serviced by multiple major national train operators including TransPennine Express, East Midland Trains, CrossCountry, and Northern with direct routes to London (St. Pancras), Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, and East Anglia.

Sheffield also has several premium, luxury train services available – via East Midland Trains – with the Master Cutler, the Sheffield Continental and the South Yorkshireman all running through the city.

Sheffield is connected to the major motorways, the M1 (London – Leeds) and the M18 (Doncaster – Goole), via the Sheffield Parkway and the city also has several bus and coach services operating out of its main bus station, the Sheffield Interchange.

The city’s largest bus operator, First South Yorkshire, provides transport services in and around Sheffield whilst the National Express operates coach services to major cities like London, Nottingham and Bradford. Sheffield also has a tram system called SuperTram for commute around the city.

The closest airport by road is East Midlands Airport – an hour’s drive from Sheffield City Centre – although there is an hourly rail service to Manchester Airport operated by South TransPennine.

The city is also connected to Rotherham and Doncaster by the River Trent and there are several navigable inland waterways controlled by the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation (S&SY).

Food

When it comes to finding exciting restaurants in Sheffield, Ecclesall Road is a pretty good place to start. Popular amongst students, Ecclesall Road is where you can find many of Sheffield’s trendiest bars and restaurants.

Or if you are looking for a more international feel, Sheffield’s London Road is known for its diverse demographics, and with that comes a smorgasbord of cuisines ranging from Chinese to Polish.

In the city centre, on West Street (that runs through the West End district of the city centre), there are a multitude of pubs with some, due to the long history of Sheffield, going back decades and decades.

Indian restaurant, Aagrah, known for their Kashmiri cuisine and located at the city’s square, were also the proud owners of the “Best Restaurant Group in the UK” title, awarded to them by the British Curry Awards in 2013 – so that might be one for the bucket list if you like your Indian food.

All around the city centre, there is also a bevy of sweet little cafes to choose from if you just want to sit down for a chat on a sunny day.
