You won’t be stuck for things to do in one of our new builds in Midlothian, with plenty of family-friendly activities and beautiful Scottish countryside to enjoy.

If you want to discover more about the area’s history and its importance in Scotland’s coal trade, head over to the National Mining Museum at the Lady Victoria Colliery in Newtongrange.

For those preferring to explore the great outdoors, there are over 100km of signposted paths and various walking routes to discover in the Pentland Hills, making it an ideal destination to explore Scotland’s beauty.

If you’re looking for one place with a whole day’s worth of family fun, Dalkeith Country Park has a lot to offer, such as an outdoor puzzle game, Fort Douglas Adventure and a Go Ape. Other country parks worth visiting in the area include Roslin Glen Country Park and Vogrie Country Park.

And for something different, Midlothian Snowsports Centre is perfect for anyone wanting to ski or snowboard all year round, as well as being home to the first alpine coaster in Scotland.

Transport in Midlothian

As the main city in the area, most roads in Midlothian lead to Edinburgh, and joining the City of Edinburgh Bypass from our new build homes in Midlothian will allow you to merge onto the M8 for trips to Glasgow, take the M90 north or head into the city centre.

Elsewhere, the major A roads snaking through the county can also take you south to the likes of Carlisle and Newcastle.

There are four railway stations in Midlothian which are part of the Borders Railway line and can be found in Shawfair, Eskbank, Newtongrange, and Gorebridge, all offering connections to Edinburgh. From there, hop onto the many services to the likes of Glasgow, Leeds, and Newcastle, as well as Edinburgh International Airport, where you can fly off to the likes of the United States and Portugal.

The county is also well-served by Lothian buses, which can usually take you to Edinburgh in under an hour, all serving different towns and villages near our new build homes in Midlothian.

Shopping in Midlothian

There are plenty of one-of-a-kind independent shops, retail parks, markets and shopping centres waiting to be explored in the area.

For your high-street favourites, Straiton Retail Park has something for everyone – whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect outfit or looking for things to add to your new home in Midlothian.

A regular market runs every third Saturday of the month at Dalkeith Country Park, with vendors selling a range of local produce, plants and more.

And thanks to the easy connections to Edinburgh, having a shopping spree in the city is possible any day. For example, Fort Kinnaird has over 70 high street and top branded fashion shops, an extensive range of homeware shops and an exciting line-up of restaurants and cafes, making it the perfect shopping destination where all your retail needs will be met.

From casual eateries to farm-to-fork dining, there’s always something for everyone near our new builds in Midlothian when it comes to eating out.

Overlooking the River Esk, The Paper Mill in Lasswade is an all-day bar and restaurant in a historic former paper mill. Offering breakfast, salads, and pub classics, this is a family-friendly location that will leave everyone feeling satisfied.

You can also eat in or take out at the Bombay Lounge or Itihaas, both family-run Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants bringing Asian flavours to Dalkeith.

For Italian dishes like homemade fresh pasta and pizza made with ingredients from Italy, family-run Cavaliere is a must-visit, and if you visit the market at Dalkeith Country Park, be sure to make a stop at the award-winning The Kitchen at Restoration Yard.
