Group Assistant Layout Designer

We are currently recruiting for a Group Assistant Layout Designer to join our dynamic Group Technical team based in Barlborough, Chesterfield.


To be considered for the role you will have a background of working in a similar role for a house builder. You will also be fully proficient in AutoCAD, Photoshop and SketchUp, with the potential to sketch by hand from red line plans.

Key duties and requirements

  • To assist the Group Layout Managers in creating, amending and finalising simple concept plans, proofing layouts and then provide detailed master plans & urban design concepts and plans.  As part of this: provide support as required to Regional Development Managers, any external civil & structural engineering consultants and other stakeholders. In addition, to ensure all layouts are designed to meet Avant design standards and maximise density constraints, whilst providing a mix of house types that fulfil the requirements and demands of the local market as stipulated by the Regional Sales team.
  • Ensure designs are in accordance with the constraints of each local planning authority as provided by the Regional Planning Manager.
  • Amend layouts as required during the pre-development & operational phases, arising from, or anticipation of, local changes or value engineering solutions, which may result in re-planning elements and full sections of the scheme/layout.
  • Under the direction of the Group Architectural Manager provide support; prepare plans, sections, elevations, and other supporting graphics, for the inclusion in planning applications.
  • Work with Region Planning Managers as directed to assist in the preparation of concise and well-presented Design & Access Statements for inclusion in planning applications.


Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced Assistant Layout Designer who evidences providing highly effective support and contribution to the creation of efficient scheme designs using Group standard house types. You will also be able to provide highly effective support and contribution to the evolution and final production of planning compliant layouts, which assist in gaining successful planning consents.

You must also be able to demonstrate excellent communication and innovation skills. You will also support the management of the delivery of key drawings and supporting information and reports, assessments, analysis and recommendations in relation to all layouts for inclusion in Land appraisals, acquisition, all associated pre-commencement and site development activity.

To be considered for this role you must also possess;

• Background of working in a similar role for a house builder.
• Be proficient in AutoCAD, Photoshop and SketchUp, with the potential to sketch by hand from red line plans.
• A working understanding of planning legislation, construction design, management regulations, with a general understanding of current building regulations.
• A passion for residential master planning, and understanding of good practice urban design principles
• Good planning, project management, organisation and decision-making capability.
• Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to differentiate between conflicting priorities/issues to identify underlying causes.
