Why is National Pet Day important?

National Pet Day celebrates the joy pets bring to our lives and promotes adoption and raises awareness of animal welfare. Founded in 2006 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, the day encourages people to adopt rather than shop and to support animals still waiting for their forever home.

How can I help animals on National Pet Day?

There are many meaningful ways to get involved and support animals in need. You could volunteer at your local RSPCA or animal shelter, or contact them to see if they are in need of supplies. You could also make a difference by adopting or fostering an animal, donating, fundraising, volunteering, sponsoring, or spreading awareness of animals in shelters on social media.

Why should you adopt a pet instead of buying one?

Adopting a pet from a rescue centre comes with many benefits, not only for the animal but for you as well.
  • A second chance at life -  Many rescue animals have been abandoned or mistreated, adoption gives them a safe, loving home and a fresh start.
  • Find the right match - Rescue centres work to match pets with their right families, helping you find a companion that suits your lifestyle, home and needs.
  • Often already trained - Many rescue pets are already house-trained, making the transition into your home easier than raising a young puppy or kitten.
  • Health and emotional perks - Pets can help reduce stress and ease loneliness, and encourage a more active lifestyle through daily routines like walking and playtime.
  • More cost-effective - Adoption is usually more affordable than buying from breeders or pet stores, with fees often covering vaccinations, microchipping, and neutering.

What is the best pet for a family?

Choosing the right pet depends on your lifestyle, time, and the space available in your home. Here are some popular options to consider:

Dogs: Best for active, involved families

Dogs are loyal and playful companions, best suited to active families who can provide regular walks, training, and attention. While they require commitment, they are often considered the classic family pet due to their strong bonds with owners.

Cats: Best for busy households

Cats are more independent than dogs and are well suited to busier households or smaller homes. They can be affectionate and make great companions, while still being relatively low-maintenance compared to more demanding pets.

Guinea pigs: Best for gentle, hands-on families

Guinea pigs are gentle, sociable pets that are easy to handle once they are settled in. They do require regular cleaning, feeding, and a suitably sized enclosure, and shouldn’t be kept alone as they get lonely.

Rabbits: Best for patient families

Rabbits can be affectionate and playful pets that can be litter trained and live between 8–12 years. They need plenty of space and daily interaction, and are better suited to families with older children who can handle them carefully. Rabbits are highly sociable animals, meaning they shouldn’t live alone as they thrive in bonded pairs or groups.

Fish: Best for very low maintenance companionship

Fish are calming to watch and require less interaction than other pets. While they are often seen as low-maintenance, they still need regular tank cleaning, water changes, and proper care to stay healthy.

Choosing the right pet also depends on your home environment, available space, and lifestyle, helping ensure both your family and your pet feel comfortable and happy.

How can I celebrate my pet on National Pet Day?

There are plenty of simple yet meaningful ways to celebrate your pet and show your appreciation.

  • Make homemade treats - If your pet is a foodie, making them some homemade treats is a great way to celebrate the day. However, always ensure the ingredients are safe and suitable for your pet.
  • Spend quality time with your pet - Whether it’s a long walk, a new adventure, or extra playtime at home, giving your pet your full attention can mean the most.
  • Treat them to something new - A new toy, bed or accessory can be a great way to spoil your pet.
  • Capture the moment - You can never have enough pictures of your pet, so take some photos of your pet to remember the day.
