As the festive season approaches, interiors take on a softer glow - filled with warmth, nostalgia and a hint of sparkle.

This year, creating a cosy yet considered Christmas look is all about natural textures, subtle shimmer and conscious design choices.

To help inspire this season’s decorating, we partnered with Jay Thomas Fischer of Thomas Fischer Interiors to reveal the top trends and practical tips for achieving a stylish, welcoming festive look.

  1. Bring the outside in
“Nature-inspired tones – mocha, olive, terracotta and champagne – are replacing traditional red and green,” says Jay.

“When paired with raw, natural materials like wood, linen and dried foliage, they create a grounded, organic feel that’s both calming and sophisticated - the perfect backdrop for the festive season.”

  1. Minimalist magic
This Christmas, less is more. “Embrace simplicity by choosing fewer, more sculptural pieces,” Jay advises.

“A single brushed brass candlestick holder or statement ornament can say more than a cluttered display.” Soft lighting also plays a key role in creating a luxurious, intimate feel.

  1. Vintage revival
Nostalgia is back, but with a refined touch. Think heirloom-style ornaments, mercury glass baubles and plaid ribbons for a sense of story and warmth.

“It’s about creating connections - décor that feels lived-in and loved will bring a sentimental touch to your home,” says Jay.

  1. A greener Christmas
Conscious design choices are now a mainstay of festive decorating. “Single-use plastics and disposable wrapping are on their way out,” Jay explains.

“Instead, look to natural or reusable materials like fabric or paper. Reusable wrapping, handmade ornaments and locally sourced greenery not only look beautiful but also help reduce waste and environmental impact.”

  1. The soft glow of the season
“Lighting is the secret ingredient to a cosy festive home,” says Jay. Layer soft, ambient light using candles, fairy lights and warm-toned bulbs.

“Try placing fairy lights in glass jars, draping a garland of lights over a mirror, or using paper star lanterns to bring a gentle, golden glow,” suggests Jay.

For those who prefer a more minimal approach, a few key touches can still make a big impact.

“A simple garland of eucalyptus, pine or olive branches instantly adds texture and scent, while neutral tones paired with brushed brass, champagne or muted silver bring an understated sparkle,” Jay adds.

A modern Christmas, Jay believes, is about balance - blending nostalgia with simplicity, style with sustainability. “It’s less about perfection,” he adds, “and more about creating moments that feel meaningful.”
