Things to do in Wakefield

Wakefield’s is known for its arts scene, with one of its main galleries, The Hepworth, named after local legend and famous sculptor, Barbara Hepworth.

There’s also the Theatre Royal, one of the oldest venues in the city, built in 1894. The Theatre Royal puts on several theatre shows, gigs and comedy shows throughout the year.

Wakefield also organises a music festival every year at Clarence Park.

Hosted by The Wakefield Music Collective, the festival has been running annually since 1991, showing the best of Wakefield’s local talent.

Places to eat in Wakefield

There’s a good selection of restaurants in Wakefield.

There are Brazilian spots like Estabulo Rodizio Bar and Grill, Cuban tapas bars like Qubana, and Americana joints like The Smokehouse, as well as Italian restaurants like Rustico and Capri at The Vine.

There are also restaurants like The Robatory, which serves a bit of everything, from hamburgers to pancakes to Asian fusion seafood.

There are also traditional British restaurants, like The Yorkshire Brasserie, which has a seasonal menu that puts a unique twist on various Yorkshire favourites.

Transport in Wakefield

The city has two train stations: Wakefield Westgate and Wakefield Kirkgate.

The larger of the two, Wakefield Westgate, runs regular services to Leeds, London King’s Cross, Aberdeen, Doncaster, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Penzance, Plymouth, Rotherham, Sheffield, and more.

Wakefield Kirkgate also runs services to Leeds and Sheffield, as well as to Barnsley, Castleford, Pontefract, and Nottingham.

Being close to Leeds, commuters can also take advantage of Leeds’ international airport – Leeds Bradford Airport – which is just under an hour’s drive from Wakefield’s city centre.

Shopping in Wakefield

The Ridings Centre is the major shopping centre in Wakefield.

Featuring over 80 stores, shops include well-known high-street retailers like M&S, Boots and Primark, as well as supermarkets like Morrisons. Ridings also has several independent stores, such as the Art World Gallery and The Wakefield Antiques and Collectables Centre, as well as a five-screen cinema and several cafés.

Other shopping centres in the city include Trinity Walk – a retail development that was built in-line with a regeneration project which was completed in 2011.

Trinity Walk is home to several clothing retailers, including Next and New Look, as well as a Sainsbury’s supermarket.
